What is Obesity?
Obesity is a condition in which excess amount of body fat is accumulated i.e., more than 20% of an individual’s ideal body fat. Overweight is different from obesity. The weight may come from muscle, bone, fat, and/or body water. Obesity may cause severe effects on health leading to reduced life expectancy. It increases the likelihood of various diseases such as Diabetes, Heart disease, Osteoarthritis, certain types of cancer etc. It might have adverse effect on both physical and mental conditions. Obesity is caused due to the excess amount of food intake, lack of physical activity and genetic susceptibility; insufficient sleep, increased use of medications (that can cause weight gain), pregnancy at a later age, epigenetic risk factors passed on generations etc… It is very important to treat obesity as it leads to other chronic illness. BMI (Body Mass Index) is used to identify an obese person. It is calculated using a person’s height and weight.
