What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid Arthritis is a long-term autoimmune disease that leads to inflammation of the joints and surrounding tissues. It is a chronic, systemic inflammatory disorder that may principally attack flexible joints and it may affect many tissues and organs. In rheumatoid arthritis, the immune system, instead of attacking foreign organisms attacks the body’s own tissues, specifically the synovia, a thin membrane that lines the joints. As a result of the attack, fluid builds up in the joints, causing pain and inflammation. The process involves an inflammatory response of the capsule around the joints secondary to swelling of synovial cells, excess synovial fluid, and the development of fibrous tissue in the synovium. The “rheumatoid factor” is an antibody that can be found in the blood of 80% of people with rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid factor is detected by a simple blood test. Possible risk factors for developing rheumatoid arthritis include genetic background, smoking, silica inhalation, periodontal disease, and microbes in the bowels.
